After we had put the fish into holding tanks we started excavation. A low spot in the yard was handy to spoil the extra material.

Next we set the liner. I only use Firestone 45 mil EPDM Pond liner. Before placing any mortar or stone we fill the pond to fully stretch the liner and drain it back down below the grade of the lowest stone we plan to set. In the picture on the left we are setting a concrete base for the perimeter stone. They will get foot traffic and must be supported.
Below; larger ponds receive the same on a larger scale.

Next a good cleaning is followed by setting the submersible pump in a bio filter as seen in the bottom of the picture. A couple of rocks will dress out the top of the filter and I like to place a water lily or two close by so it's not seen at all when the pond is finished.
For this larger pond we custom built a 200 gallon bio filter with a removable skimmer basket under the deck.
